Which Silverado Trail Boss Trim Is Right for You: The LT Trail Boss or the Custom Trail Boss?

Three 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500s: a red LT Trail Boss, a blue ZR2, and a white Custom Trail Boss.

Chevrolet’s iconic and reliable Silverado 1500 is known for its various off-road trim and package options. Two trims we receive a lot of questions about are the LT Trail Boss and the Custom Trail Boss. They both have “Trail Boss” in their names but have also earned their spots on the lineup because they will appeal to slightly different drivers. If you’re looking for a Chevy Silverado 1500 for sale near Danville and are interested in a Trail Boss trim, our team would gladly help you pick yours out.

We recognize that there are many ways people in Danville enjoy living in this corner of Kentucky. For some, it’s a retirement destination (it was named one of the top places to retire, after all). For others, it is where they are putting down roots and building their careers. The LT Trail Boss and the Custom Trail Boss might appeal to these different drivers for particular reasons that we will cover below.

What They Share in Common

We’ll first go over what these two trims have in common. Each one offers a 2-inch lift, creating better ground clearance and more freedom to roll over uneven terrain that might be littered with small rocks or other debris. Each one also has a two-speed transfer case, which allows you to adjust driving dynamics on the go for different on and off-road situations. These include modes such as high-range four-wheel drive, which boosts traction on slippery roads like dirt or gravel terrain. Also included is low-range four-wheel drive, which improves torque for off-road driving on mud, sand, and snow.

Each trim also has an automatic locking rear differential, which allows you to lock the rear wheels so they spin at the same time, improving traction on slippery surfaces. The Trail Boss models share wheels and tires, too. These are 18-inch high gloss, black-painted wheels with Goodyear Wrangler mud terrain tires. You do have the option to upgrade to 20-inch all-terrain tires or 20-inch mud terrain tires on either model as well. You will also get power retractable steps on both models, making it easier for people to hop in and out of your vehicle.

Additionally, each trim gets a heavy-duty air filter that removes particles, pollution, and debris from the air in the cabin for easier breathing for you and your passengers. When the windy season picks up in Danville in February, your allergy-prone passengers will appreciate this feature. Finally, each of these models gets Hill Descent Control, which prevents the vehicle from picking up unwanted speed when traveling down a slope.

The Custom Trail Boss Is for Off-Road Enthusiasts

When drivers ask us which of the Trail Boss trims is right for their needs, we ask them whether they seek off-road environments or simply need to travel through them to get to their destination. If they tell us they love spending weekends at Cave Fork Road exploring the trails, then we say they should get the Custom Trail Boss. The Custom Trail Boss has features that are clearly more tailored towards people who go off-roading for the thrill of it and want the freedom to explore rougher terrain.

The Custom Trail Boss also has a package that is not available for the LT Trail Boss, which is the Custom Convenience Package. Something we like to point out about this package is the LED cargo bed lighting. If your off-road adventures keep you out past sundown, there likely won’t be many street lamps to illuminate your bed. So this feature helps you get snacks out of a cooler, load up your dirt bikes, or do whatever you need to do at the end of a long day on the trails in the dark. It also has an EZ lift power lock and release tailgate. This lockable tailgate will come in handy when you leave your truck unattended for a long day of hiking or exploring your wilderness destination.

The Custom Trail Boss trim also has a special edition that clearly sets it apart as a wilderness enthusiast truck. That is the available Realtree Special Edition. Perfect for hunters, campers, and anyone who likes a nature-inspired aesthetic, it gets you Realtree graphics on the hood, bedside, and tailgate. You’ll also find Realtree decorative trim on the interior door panels, as well as a Realtree logo on the bed. The bed enjoys the Chevytec spray bedliner to protect your bed from damage.

The LT Trail Boss Is for Drivers Who Find Themselves Off Road Occasionally

If you aren’t necessarily an off-road enthusiast, but your work takes you through unpaved environments, we recommend the LT Trail Boss. It has a nice combination of features that make it rugged enough for remote job sites and comfortable enough for those who commute to Lexington-Fayette or other busy nearby cities.

There are a few features that make the LT Trail Boss clearly ideal for those who spend more time in the city and paved environments than drivers of the Custom Trail Boss. One of these is the available Rear Cross Traffic Braking, which is not available on the Custom Trail Boss. When you are reversing out of a parking spot onto a busy street, this system will automatically apply the brakes if traffic is crossing behind your vehicle.

Additionally, the LT trail boss has the Convenience Package II available, which adds an array of modern features to enhance your daily drive in exciting new ways. This includes a Universal Home Remote, along with a rear sliding power window, and the Bose Premium Sound System, with seven speakers and subwoofer, for crystal-clear sound no matter where your travels take you. If trailering cargo is a regular occurrence, the package comes with a variety of trailering tools that include Hitch Guidance with Hitch View, a Trailer Brake Controller, and access to Chevy’s Trailering App.
