Compact, pint-sized luxury SUVs have become a popular niche for American drivers, and for good reasons. Cozy cabins and state-of-the-art technology are just a few elements that make these models so attractive to singles, couples, and small families alike. These SUVs are constantly changing and adapting, though, making it challenging to decide which model year you should look into purchasing. For example, in comparing the 2021 Buick Envision vs 2020 Buick Envision, some significant differences stand out.

It's hard to imagine that the 2020 Envision had room for improvements as it was an already fantastic luxury vehicle; however, the 2021 version has been completely sculpted to perfection. A different powertrain has entered the playing field as well as revised infotainment features. The entire vehicle has been slightly resized and configured, and the standard safety systems only further improve this fantastic, loved SUV. It’s the perfect blend of athleticism and elegance, even when it comes to customizing the color.

This model year of the Envision is available in seven unique paint colors, including Ebony Twilight Metallic, Summit White, Satin Steel Metallic, Burnished Bronze Metallic, Cinnabar Metallic, Rich Garnet Metallic, and Dark Moon Blue Metallic. On the other hand, the 2020 Envision is only offered in six exterior paint colors. These include Ebony Twilight Metallic, Summit White, Satin Steel Metallic, Espresso Metallic, Chili Red Metallic, and Dark Moon Blue Metallic. With all of that in mind, 2021 Envision drivers, along with the other upgrades, get the opportunity for greater customization. That's not to say that the 2020 model should be thrown out of the picture, though. Both are great vehicles, and the only way to make a fully informed decision is to continue on for the full comparison.

  • Performance

A gray 2021 Buick Envision is parked in front of a river and a city at sunset as part of the 2021 Buick Envision vs 2020 Buick Envision comparison.

People considering a luxury vehicle such as the Envision may not care as much about performance as drivers looking for a sports car. However, SUV performance is still important, especially considering the changes from the 2020 model to the 2021 version. While the 2020 models can be equipped with one of two powertrains, the 2021 Envision only uses one. Let's take a look at the differences.

    One Single Option for 2021

The 2021 Buick Envision is powered by a robust 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. Equipped with a 9-speed automatic transmission and FWD, this powertrain generates 230 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. You may also add AWD if you want more control over varying road conditions. This is a great engine and prevents drivers from having to pick and choose. Let's now take a look at what the 2020 model has to offer.

    Two 2020 Choices

Switching gears to the 2020 Envision, there are two powertrain options. The standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine makes 197 hp and 192 lb-ft of torque. Using FWD and a 6-speed automatic transmission, it has a fuel economy averaged at 25 MPG combined (22 city/29 highway). The other option is the aforementioned 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder engine that produces 252 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. It also gets about 24 MPG combined (21 city/27 highway).

So while all 2021 models come standard with a more powerful engine than the standard 2020 version, the 2020 model does offer the most powerful of them all. That said, every driver's needs are different, and deciding between the 2021 and 2020 models will ultimately come down to personal preference in terms of performance.

  • Safety

When it comes to safety, everyone wants a vehicle that has the most advanced features. There shouldn’t be any confusion about what features are included on which trim either. It all needs to be laid out clearly so that drivers understand what sort of protections they are getting.

    Buick Safety

The 2021 Buick Envision comes standard with quite a few incredible safety systems and packages. Cruise control with set/resume speed functions is included on every trim level as well as an HD rearview camera. Both the Buick Driver Confidence and Driver Confidence Plus packages have been added to every Envision too.

The first package includes forward collision alert, emergency braking, automatic high beams, front pedestrian braking, lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warning, and a following distance indicator. Meanwhile, the Plus package adds blindspot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The final safety system that we will mention is the Buckle to Drive feature. This system will not allow the Envision to move until the seatbelt is fastened.

While many of these features can be found on a 2020 Buick Envision model, you'll have to get a higher trim level to find them all in one model. Only rear parking sensors and a rearview camera are standard on the base 2020 Envision. The newer version certainly has a lot more to offer.

    Safety on Higher Trims

Now, let’s take a closer look at the safety systems on higher trims. The 2021 Buick Envision Essence can be equipped with a Head-Up Display, front/rear park assist, and a surround-view camera system. However, all of these systems are standard on the top-tier Avenir trim.

As for the 2020 Envision, the second-level Preferred trim comes with blindspot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Then, the mid-level Premium gets lane-departure warning and forward-collision warning systems. Lastly, the top-of-the-line Premium II model adds automatic high beams, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, emergency braking, a Head-Up Display, and the surround-view camera system. With all of this safety equipment, both the 2020 and 2021 models are extremely safe. However, the 2021 model, again, does offer more from the beginning.

  • Technology

An important aspect that most people want to know about before purchasing a vehicle is the infotainment system. Luckily, both the 2020 Buick Envision and the 2021 Buick Envision do not disappoint in this area on any trim.

    A Look at Infotainment

The 2020 model comes standard with a 6-speaker stereo, USB ports for charging your smartphones, and satellite radio. Displayed on an 8-inch touchscreen is the Buick Infotainment System. This includes Bluetooth connectivity, compatibility with Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto, and AM/FM radio. OnStar telematics and a 4G LTE wifi hotspot are also included as well as an auxiliary port and two 110-volt power outlets.

Comparing these features to the infotainment system on the 2021 Buick Envision, you may notice that things haven’t changed much. The 2021 model is very similar, but it does add some more and better features.

Available on the 2021 Buick Envision Preferred (base) model and standard on the Essence trim is a 10-inch touchscreen interface with advanced voice-recognition technology. Taking things a step further, the Avenir adds a navigation system and more memory storage. The Essence comes with a 7-speaker stereo, and the Avenir gets an upgraded Bose sound system with 8 speakers. HD radio is also available on the Essence, and it is standard on the Avenir.

If you compare those features to the corresponding trim levels for the 2020 model, you will notice that the only similarity is the navigation system. At this point, you’ve probably come to terms with the fact that the 2021 Envision has a lot more to offer. The refreshments go far beyond cosmetic elements.

  • Space

The cream and black front seats and dashboard of a 2021 Buick Envision are shown.

Looking at both vehicles side-by-side, you will notice that the 2021 Buick Envision is slightly larger than the 2020 Envision. However, the extra space has been used in ways that you might not expect. The 2021 Envision measurements sit at 185.5-inches in length, 74.1-inches in width, and 64.6-inches in height. The wheelbase is approximately 109.4-inches. Comparatively, the 2020 model is 1.8-inches shorter, 1.7-inches smaller in width, and 2.2-inches taller. What does this all mean in terms of interior space, though?

    Space for Passengers

While both vehicles can transport up to 5 people, the passenger space and cargo area have both changed. Let’s look at the 2021 Envision first. The front headroom is 39.6-inches, which means it is smaller by 0.4-inches. Other areas in the front that have lost some space include the legroom (down by 0.5-inches) and the shoulder room (down by 0.3-inches). However, the front seat hip room has grown by 0.7-inches.

Slipping into the second row of seating, you will notice that the rear shoulder room has decreased by 0.7-inches, and the back hip room has also had 5.7-inches shaved off of it. However, the rear headroom has gained 0.4-inches, and the legroom has also been increased by 1.8-inches. What this means is that there is a bit more room for young passengers to grow without compromising on comfort.

    Differing Cargo Capacities

As for the cargo space, the 2021 Buick Envision provides 25.2 cu.ft. of room in the back for groceries, backpacks, luggage, and sports gear. But if you need more space, you can simply fold the back row of seating down to open up the cargo area to 52.7 cu.ft. On the other hand, the 2020 Envision offers 26.9 cu.ft. of space in the back with a maximum cargo area measured at 57.3 cu.ft. The 2020 model offers a bit more cargo space, but ultimately, the space will feel about the same.
