We’ve proudly served the North Central Kentucky region for over 75 years, providing quality cars, trucks, and SUVs at affordable prices.
If you’re considering moving to an electric truck, you’ve probably heard of the new Chevrolet Silverado EV by now. Chevy recently revealed their new electric truck, so we thought we’d see how it compares to another upcoming model, the Tesla Cybertruck. In this article, we’ll compare these two new trucks’ pricing, performance, and EV powertrain to help you make an informed decision.
Chevrolet Silverado EV Price
Chevrolet plans on production to begin in the second quarter of 2023, but only with the WT (Work Truck) trim level. Chevy designed the work truck primarily for fleet customers and drivers who don’t want all the extra features found on other Silverado trim levels. Chevy announced a second trim, the RST, will start production in the Fall of 2023. We’re told the RST represents the top tier for the Silverado EV lineup, and we expect it to come fully loaded with premium features.
The WT starts at the manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $39,900 before you factor destination fees, options, and accessories. On the RST model, the MSRP begins at $105,000 before any fees or add-ons. We’ve streamlined the buying process with our online pre-approval application.
Tesla Cybertruck Price
Tesla initially unveiled the Cybertruck in 2019 as an upcoming model. However, Tesla continues to push back the production timeline. In fact, they’ve recently removed pricing information from their website, calling into question its availability. Nevertheless, Tesla continues taking pre-orders for the Cybertruck, so we believe it’s a question of when, not if it arrives.
The Cybertruck comes in three trims based on the number of electric motors. The single motor Cybertruck has rear-wheel drive and a projected starting price of around $40,000. We hesitate to guess the pricing of the two or three motor versions, but you can expect them to fall in line with the industry.
Chevrolet Silverado EV Performance Specs
Chevrolet plans to manufacture the Silverado EV on the GMC Hummer platform, not the current non-electric Silverado underpinnings. From that, we know it has two electric motors, one for each axle, and comes with an independent front and rear suspension system. Wheel options range from 18 inches up to 24 inches in various materials and styles.
Chevy says the Silverado EV WT can produce 510 horsepower and 615 pound-feet torque. However, the RST adds a “Wide Open Watts” WOW drive mode that boasts 664 horsepower and 780 pound-feet of torque. We don’t yet know the RST trim’s power output in regular mode, but it shouldn’t be less than the WT. In addition, Chevy claims the RST can travel from zero to 60 mph in under 4.5 seconds.
On the RST, you get adjustable air springs to lift the Silverado EV an additional two inches. The Silverado EV also features four-wheel steering, improving low-speed maneuverability and high-speed towing control.
A new Multiflex Midgate comes on the Silverado EV that folds in a 60/40 split to extend the effective bed length inside the cabin. In addition, you can take out the rear window and store it to accommodate larger items.
You also get the Multiflex Tailgate that offers various configurations to extend the bed length and act as a step or workspace. The standard bed length measures 5-feet, 9-inches. With the Multiflex Midgate lowered and the Multiflex Tailgate extended, your bed length nearly doubles to 10-feet, 10-inches.
Tesla Cybertruck Performance Specs
Tesla’s Cybertruck looks like something NASA developed to drive on the moon. It has a dent- and scratch-resistant stainless-steel body that’s all sharp lines and angles. Tesla claims the single motor configuration travels from zero to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds and achieves a top speed of 110 mph. The dual-motor powertrain can go from zero to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and tops out at 120 mph. The three-motor setup boasts a zero to 60 mph time of only 2.9 seconds and reaches 130 mph.
Every Cybertruck comes with an adjustable air suspension system that provides up to 16 inches of ground clearance. In addition, a 35-degree approach angle and a 28-inch departure angle add to the off-road capability of the Cybertruck.
Silverado EV Towing Specs
Chevy estimates the towing capacity of the WT model to reach up to 8,000 pounds and a payload rating of up to 1,200 pounds. On the RST trim, you can expect it to tow up to 10,000 pounds and a payload rating of 1,300 pounds when properly equipped. Chevy has said that future models will come with up to a 20,000-pound tow rating.
Tesla Cybertruck Towing Specs
Tesla’s single motor variation can tow up to 7,500 pounds, and the dual-motor tows up to 10,000 pounds. Tesla claims the three motor configuration has a maximum tow rating of up to 14,000 pounds.
Silverado EV Range and Battery Charge Time
Chevy estimates that with the 200 kWh battery, your Silverado EV can travel up to 400 miles on a single charge. In addition, the architecture allows for 800-volt and 350 kW charging that adds 100 miles of driving range in under 10 minutes.
Tesla Cybertruck Range and Battery Charge Time
Tesla hasn’t released definitive numbers or even the size of the battery pack they plan to use on the Cybertruck. However, every Cybertruck comes with a 250-kW charging cable, and Tesla claims the single motor can travel 250 miles on a full charge.
Chevrolet has been manufacturing trucks for over 100 years, and the Silverado began its run over 20 years ago. As a result, you can be confident Chevy can produce a capable electric version on an existing platform. Tesla continues to delay production. So, we don’t know when you can purchase their Cybertruck. In addition, we can’t measure reliability either, because this would be their first truck manufactured.
