There’s no question that shopping for a reliable, used Chevy truck can be a daunting task. Chevrolet offers a variety of options on their standard lineup that features the Colorado, Silverado, and the Silverado HD. So, which do you choose? We’re here to help narrow down your search with this list of the most dependable Chevy trucks on the road.
Chevrolet Colorado
The Chevrolet Colorado is the perfect midsize truck that doesn’t compromise on performance. Although it’s the smallest truck in the Chevy lineup, the Colorado stands its ground with an available max towing capacity of 7,700 lbs. and a max payload of 1,578 lbs. Add in the maximum cargo space of 49.9 cu.ft. with a fuel efficiency of 20 MPG in the city and 30 MPG on the highway, and it’s easy to see why the Colorado is one of the most versatile Chevy trucks on the road.
The current generation of the Colorado was introduced for the 2015 model year and comes with three engine options. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine offers 200 hp and 191 lb-ft of torque with a maximum towing capability of 3,500 lbs. The next step up is the 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces 308 hp and 275 lb-ft torque with a maximum towing capability of 7,000 lbs. The third option is the beefy Duramax 2.8-liter turbo-diesel engine that produces 369 lb-ft of torque and can tow up to 7,700 lbs.
The Colorado also features safety and technology options that, when paired with its powerful engine options and performance capabilities, earned it the 2020 Kelley Blue Book Best Buy Award for midsize trucks. Today, you’ll find an assortment of used Chevy Colorado trucks available that are ideal for drivers looking for a midsize truck that’s easy to maneuver but still capable of hauling large loads. Some of the most popular trims available include the well-equipped LT and the off-road Z71.
Chevrolet Silverado
The Chevrolet Silverado is an icon among truck drivers, and for good reason. With over seven million miles of testing, it’s been a staple on the road since its introduction in the late 1990s and is now in its fourth generation. However, the third generation only ended production in 2019, so you won’t miss much buying a used 2013 – 2019 model year Silverado 1500.
With the newest fourth-generation Silverado trucks flying off car lots, used third-generation models are readily available and offer plenty of options, including a wide array of trims. From the base Work Truck to the luxurious High Country, there is a used Silverado 1500 that is perfect for your needs. There are also four engine options available, depending on the trim and model year. The most powerful option is a 6.2-liter V8 that produces 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, giving you all the power that you could desire in a half-ton truck.
Stepping down slightly, there is a 5.3-liter V8 with 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. While not quite as powerful as the top engine, this still makes a great all-around choice and is even available with the eAssist system to give you some extra torque. If you are looking for fuel economy and affordability over raw power, then the base 4.3-liter V6 engine might be the best option for you. Producing 285 hp and 305 lb-ft of torque, this engine still has enough muscle to handle nearly any task that you will encounter.
Depending on the trim package and powertrain, the Silverado can tow up to 12,500 lbs. While a half-ton truck might not be your first choice for a dedicated towing vehicle, the Silverado is powerful enough that it can handle trailers that could previously have only been moved by a three-quarter ton truck. No matter what you need a pickup for, it is difficult to go wrong with a used third-generation Silverado 1500.
Chevrolet Silverado HD
If you’re looking for a large heavy-duty pickup truck, look no further than the Chevrolet Silverado HD. Updated a year after the standard Silverado, the third-generation Silverado HD was produced for the 2015 to the 2019 model years. When it comes to used Chevy trucks, the Silverado HD is one of the best options on the lot and was awarded the 2019 Kelley Blue Book Best Resale Value Award for Full-Size Pick-Up. So, what makes the HD so special? To start with, it can produce 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque while towing a maximum capacity of 23,300 lbs.
The Silverado HD offers two heavy-duty engine options that earned the HD its reputation for being the best hauler on the road. The Duramax 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V8 engine is available on the HD crew cab and produces 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque. However, be aware that the Duramax in 2015 – 2016 model year trucks is a bit weaker with only 397 hp and 765 lb-ft of torque. The second engine option is the Vortec 6.0-liter V8 engine that produces 360 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. While the Silverado 2500 and Silverado 3500 are the same size and use the same engines, the Silverado 3500 has enhanced suspension that gives it its superior towing and payload numbers.
Aside from the powerful engines, the Silverado HD is available in a variety of configurations that include a Double Cab and Crew Cab. Each model comes with a standard box or a long box option that adds to the Silverado HD’s bed length, volume, and payload. Whichever configuration you prefer, a used third-generation Chevy Silverado HD is a great option for hauling heavy loads. If you need a real truck, then this is the choice for you.
Chevrolet Standards: Towing with Confidence
With any new or used Chevrolet truck, you’ll get plenty of features from technology to safety. Chevrolet offers some of the most advanced technology like the In-Vehicle Trailering System available on the newer Silverados. The system features a pre-departure checklist, trailer light test, trailering profiles, and service reminders that allow you to tow the heaviest load with confidence. There’s also a tow/haul reminder feature as well as trailer theft alert, all of which you’ll find at your fingertips on the myChevrolet Mobile App.
