Chevrolet turned heads in December 2019 when it confirmed its plans to redesign one of its best-selling full-size SUVs – the Tahoe. Fast forward a year, and Chevrolet has kept its promise with the debut of the all-new 2021 Tahoe. While the team here at Dan Cummins Chevrolet Buick of Georgetown is excited to show off Chevy’s latest creation, that’s not all we’re excited about. The new 2021 model also means that there are many used Chevy Tahoe models available that make outstanding purchases for drivers looking for a reliable and spacious pre-owned SUV.
If you’re in the market for a used Chevrolet Tahoe, we’re here to help. We’ve highlighted the latest models from 2020, 2019, and 2018. To help you make the best choice for your needs and ensure you’re getting the best bang for your buck, join us as we look at the trim options and pricing, engine and performance, and safety and technology features that you’ll find on used Chevrolet Tahoe models from the last three years.
Trim Options and Pricing
The Chevrolet Tahoe is known for holding its value because of its many features, two-wheel and four-wheel-drive options, as well as Chevrolet’s reputation for building reliable, high-performing vehicles. The latest Tahoe you’ll find on any pre-owned lot is the 2020 model that, when purchased new, has a starting MSRP of $49,000 for the base LS trim. While the prices of used cars can vary greatly depending on options, age, condition, and more, you can be assured that you will be getting a great deal on any of the used Tahoes on our lot.
The LS, LT, and Premier trim options were standard across 2020, 2019, and 2018 models. The trims offer progressive upgrades and available features that cater to the variety of driver needs and preferences. For example, the LS offers the basics while the LT includes advanced features like heated leather seats, a power liftgate, and Lane Keep Assist, as well as an available Off-Road Package. The Premium trim takes luxury a step further with a head-up display, keyless entry, and a push-button start.
Engine and Performance
2020, 2019, and 2018 used Chevrolet Tahoe models include the same two powertrain options across all three trim levels. The standard engine for the LS and LT trims is the 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 engine that’s proven its ability on the road mile after mile. The engine delivers 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. Models upgraded to include the Trailering Package have an impressive towing capacity of up to 8,600 lbs.
The Premier trim options on 2020, 2019, and 2018 models include an available upgrade from the 5.3-liter V8 engine to the 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8 engine. This upgrade delivers even more power and performance to the Tahoe, but how much? The 6.2-liter produces an impressive 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. This makes the 6.2-liter a popular upgrade for drivers looking for more power, although choosing the larger engine will not improve towing performance.
Another factor that attracts drivers to the Tahoe is the model’s solid fuel economy for a full-size SUV. All three of these model years boast a 26-gallon fuel tank, giving you plenty of range for any trip. Fuel economy only varies slightly across the model years, with fuel economy averaging 15 MPG in the city and 22 MPG on the highway for the 2020 and 2019 models for the base two-wheel drive version. Surprisingly, a four-wheel drive Tahoe with the larger engine gets basically the same fuel economy at around 14 MPG in the city and 22 MPG on the highway.
Technology Features
The hub of technology on the 2020 and 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe models is the Chevrolet Infotainment system that’s housed on an 8-inch high-definition touchscreen. The touchscreen comes standard on the LS and LT models with an available navigation upgrade on the Premier and LT models. The technology on the 2018 model is slightly different and is known as MyLink, which is housed on a multicolor screen where messages, music, and maps are displayed. For 2018, the 8-in color touchscreen was not standard but was an available upgrade.
Aside from these minor differences, 2020, 2019, and 2018 models offer many other similar technology features, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. The models also include up to 13 charging locations with a variety of USB ports and power outlets throughout the vehicle. Additional technology upgrades include an available wireless charging station, which is a standard feature on the 2020 and 2019 Premier trim packages.
Teen Driver Technology is another standard feature on the models and is among Chevrolet’s most notable options. When enabled, the technology ensures distraction-free driving and provides a detailed driving report after an outing. This gives parents of teen drivers more confidence when their young driver gets behind the wheel because the technology minimizes distractions until the front seatbelt is buckled and provides a driving report card that drivers can use to improve their driving style and performance.
Safety Standards and Upgrades
Chevrolet’s commitment to safety is well-known in the automotive industry. It’s also apparent on both new and used Chevrolet Tahoe models that come standard with airbags, a tire pressure monitor, cruise control, and a rear vision camera. Chevrolet’s enhanced safety suite includes driver-awareness and driver-assist features like Forward Collision Alert, a Safety Alert Seat, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.
Used LS, LT, and Premier models come with different safety features depending on the package. Forward Collision Alert, Safety Alert Seat, Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, and IntelliBeam automatic high-beam lights are an upgrade to the 2020 LS with the Enhanced Driver Alert Package but are standard on the LT and Premier models. The Premier model also comes standard with Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.
Chevrolet set the 2020 Tahoe apart from the others by introducing head-up display technology, which was offered as an available upgrade to the Premier. Additional features on the Premier include Adaptive Cruise Control, which spans 2020, 2019, and 2018 models. Beyond this, the safety features are minimally different over the year models, which shows that Chevrolet consistently sets the bar high to offer the latest in safety.
