Benefits of Buying Used

Although different people choose used cars for a variety of reasons, there are a few common ones that we hear a lot. Probably the most frequent benefit that our customers enjoy about used vehicles is the lower price tag that you will find on them. Even if you look at a model that is only a few years old, perhaps nearly identical in many ways to the version being sold as new, you still pay a lot less than that new one. And if you go back five or ten years, then you can pay significantly less for a vehicle that is still in great condition and will treat you well for years.

Along the same lines as the lower price tag, you also get to skip a lot of depreciation by choosing a used car near you. Depreciation on a vehicle occurs simply by owning and driving it; even if you treat a car well and take proper care of it, it still depreciates in value over time. A large amount of depreciation occurs within the first few years – while depreciation continues after that, it is less dramatic. By choosing a used model, you get to avoid this initial depreciation and the value of your vehicle remains closer to what you paid for it.

One benefit that a lot of people might not think of at first when considering a used car is that it actually helps out the environment. The amount of energy and raw materials needed to manufacture a car is significant, even a fairly small vehicle still requires a lot to make. By buying a used vehicle, you help reduce the need to manufacture new models, thereby reducing this toll on the environment. And by keeping a car, truck, or SUV on the road longer, you help offset the initial impact of manufacturing that vehicle, justifying the energy and materials used to make it.

Used vs. Pre-Owned vs. CPO

You are going to encounter a few different terms when looking at used cars near you, and it is important to understand what each of them means. “Used” is a general term that refers to any vehicle that has been owned and driven by someone else. Even if a vehicle was used by another driver on a lease, rather than being actually bought, it is still considered “used” afterward. These models can range greatly in age, so you might find some used cars that are only a few years old – such as the aforementioned leased vehicles – while other models will be ten or more years old. The term “pre-owned” is simply a nicer sounding way of saying “used;” for all intents and purposes, they are identical. You will typically encounter the term “pre-owned” used by dealerships or private sellers posting their vehicles online. It simply sounds a bit more appealing than the word “used,” but they are the same.

Certified Pre-Owned, or CPO, on the other hand, is very different. A CPO vehicle has to meet certain restrictions placed by the original manufacturer and pass an extensive inspection to ensure it is in the best condition possible. Only if these standards are met can it be certified and offered as a CPO model. With this high level of quality, you also get other benefits like warranty coverage or other deals from the original manufacturer. Because the CPO process and benefits are offered by the manufacturers, they can vary from one maker to the next.

For example, Chevy and Buick vehicles must meet the following requirements:

  • They must pass a 172-point comprehensive inspection
  • They must be less than 6 model years old and must have fewer than 75,000 miles on them
  • They must have a clean title
  • They then have the following benefits:
  • They are covered by a 6-year/100,000-mile extended powertrain limited warranty
  • They are covered by a 12-month/12,000-mile new car bumper-to-bumper limited warranty
  • They include two scheduled maintenance visits within the first 2 years/24,000 miles

All of these benefits and more are included with a Chevy or Buick CPO vehicle. So you know you are getting a used car in the very best condition, with warranty protection that you typically will not find on other used models. You will only find CPO cars at a certified dealership, giving you peace of mind you can really trust.

Our Favorite Used Cars

Choosing a great used car is about finding the right model with everything you need. For some people, this means a reliable and functional four-door sedan, while others might be looking for a sporty and performance-focused two-door coupe. While our selection of used cars can change pretty regularly, some of our favorite models include the following.

Chevy Cruze

Although the Chevy Cruze has not been around as long as some other vehicles from Chevrolet, it has proven itself to be incredibly popular. The Cruze is a four-door compact model, so it is a fantastic option if you do not have a ton of space but still want comfortable seating for friends and family. Early models from 2009 are a great choice if you want to save a lot of money, while the Cruze received a facelift in 2012, so keep that in mind when looking at different used models. A second generation for the Cruze, which started in 2016, included an option for a hatchback version rather than only a standard sedan, so you can find some great features out there when looking at used models.

Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry has been around, in one size or another, since the early 1980s and has been an incredibly popular car. Early models had a smaller, compact size with a narrow body, but it became a midsize sedan with a wider body starting in the early 1990s. That means the majority of used Toyota Camrys you find will be midsize, making this a great choice if you have a growing family or simply want something a bit larger than the Cruze. There have been numerous generations during this time, with the most recent one starting with 2018 models.

Our Favorite Used Trucks

If you are looking for a vehicle to be your daily workhorse, then there is really nothing quite like a hardworking pickup. From sporty midsize models that are great for daily use, as well as for having fun on the weekend, to larger heavy-duty pickups that are designed to handle huge amounts of weight, a used truck can help you get your job done for many years to come. We get new pre-owned trucks coming in all the time, but some of our favorite pickups include the following.

Chevy Silverado 1500

One of the most popular trucks on the road, the Chevy Silverado 1500, has been around since 1999, though it follows up the Chevy C/K trucks that were made for decades before that. The modern Silverado is a full-size, light-duty pickup that is a great option if you want something larger than a midsize model, like the Chevy Colorado, but do not need all the power of a heavy-duty pickup. The third generation of the truck ran from 2013 to 2019, so you will find a lot of these when looking at used Chevy Silverado 1500s, and they are a fantastic option with plenty of power and terrific performance.

Ford F-150

The Ford F-Series of trucks have been the best-selling pickups in the US since 1977, and the highest selling vehicles overall since 1981. That is a tremendous pedigree to live up to, and there is no denying the popularity of these models, particularly the F-150. Much like the Silverado 1500, a used Ford F-150 will give you a full-size pickup, but a light-duty model rather than a heavy-duty option like the F-250 or F-350. Keep an eye out for models from 2015 or later, as this was the 13th generation for the F-150 and includes incredible technology, tremendous power, and a lighter frame for excellent overall performance.

Our Favorite Used SUVs

For a lot of families, the SUV has become the definitive vehicle for loading up with your loved ones and all the stuff you need to be able to take with you. Even if you simply have a big group of friends who often rely on you for rides, an SUV is a fantastic choice for getting around town. The spacious interior with plenty of cargo room also makes an SUV a great pick for loading up with equipment to go camping or tailgating on the weekend. Whatever you are looking for, some of our favorite models for a great SUV include the following.

Chevy Equinox

First introduced for model year 2005, the Chevy Equinox is an incredibly popular crossover SUV that offers a great combination of power and sophistication. When it was originally offered, it featured a midsize design, but starting with model year 2018, it was redesigned as a smaller compact crossover. That is important to keep in mind as you look at different used models, because the older ones that you find will be larger than ones just coming off a lease. Throughout the years, there have been numerous features and upgrades added, including a mid-cycle refresh for model year 2016 – so if you want a midsize model with excellent features, then a used Chevy Equinox from 2016 or 2017 is a terrific choice.

Toyota RAV4

Ever since it was first introduced in 1994, the Toyota RAV4 has been an incredibly popular crossover SUV throughout the world. Most used models you find will be from the third generation or later, which started with model year 2006, and included a sporty design and excellent technology. This generation also included an electric version of the RAV4 that was designed in conjunction with Tesla Motors. A used electric vehicle is a great option to consider, since they tend to depreciate quickly and you can often save a lot of money on one compared to the price of one brand-new. Even if you are not interested in an EV model, a standard used Toyota RAV4 is still an excellent option that is a lot of fun to drive.

Some of Our Favorite Georgetown-area Destinations

Georgetown is an amazing place to live, work, and play thanks to the gorgeous country all around us. A lot of us here at Dan Cummins Chevrolet Buick of Georgetown love to spend our free time outside, at parks and similar spots in the area. Some of our favorites include:<

Yuko-en on the Elkhorn - One of our favorite destinations for a leisurely stroll or a day out to relax is Yuko-en on the Elkhorn. This is a five-and-a-half acre garden that features local Bluegrass landscaping, along with Japanese-style structures. Open every day from dawn to dusk and free to the public, this is a great place to relax.

Royal Spring Park - Not only is Royal Spring Park an excellent spot to spend a few hours outdoors, but it is also considered the birthplace of bourbon. There are two historic cabins, as well as a large picnic shelter, that you can reserve for events.

Bi-Water Farm & Greenhouse - This 185-acre family farm is a fantastic place for families to head outdoors and pick up a few delicious treats while you are at it. Bi-Water Farm and Greenhouse offers a wide range of activities year-round, including hay rides and a corn maze, while offering homemade fudge, jams, jellies, and fresh produce.

Kentucky Horse Park - This might be cheating, as it is down in Lexington, but it is so close that we had to include it. Kentucky Horse Park is undoubtedly one of our favorite destinations, especially when we have kids that want to get outside and have some fun. Although Kentucky Horse Park is a working horse farm, it offers tours, and there are tons of things to see and do.

Did we leave off your favorite local destination? Come visit us and tell us all about it.
