Used Chevy Equinox
Although SUVs aren't a new concept, manufacturers continuously find new and exciting ways to redefine what it means to drive an SUV. Chevrolet, in particular, is a manufacturer with an extensive history of raising the bar for well over a century. Chevy vehicles are built with a distinctive quality that is commonly praised by fans and critics alike. Among these vehicles is the Equinox, an SUV built with the utmost versatility in mind. Shopping for a used Chevy Equinox is a simple process as there are nearly two decades worth of models to choose from.
The first Equinox was introduced to the market for the 2005 model year. At that time, the market saw a monumental increase in SUV production, and the Equinox was at the forefront of that shift. As a compact crossover, the Equinox was more comfortable and more efficient than Chevy's older body on frame SUV designs while still seating five passengers and offering all-wheel drive. This versatility quickly led to it becoming one of Chevy's most popular models.
Since its introduction, the Equinox has gone through three generations, with each redesign making it safer, more comfortable, and more efficient. The first generation ran from 2005 to 2009, while the second generation ended with the 2017 model year. The third generation is still in production today. Drivers looking to purchase a used Chevy Equinox will have plenty of different options to choose from, so it's a good idea for shoppers to perform their research.
While the Equinox has always come in either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, each generation offered a distinctly different selection of engine options. Unlike many competing SUV designs, the Equinox has always included a powerful performance engine that provides remarkable acceleration and towing performance. For the first generation, the Equinox offered two V6 engines with either 185 hp for the base vehicle or 264 hp in the higher trims.
For the second-generation Equinox, the base V6 was replaced with a far more efficient four-cylinder that employed modern technology to produce a very similar 182 hp despite its smaller size. But while power stayed the same, fuel economy increased from 19 MPG combined to 26 MPG combined. The higher-performance engine option for the second-generation was originally a 3.0L V6 with 264 hp, but this was replaced with an even larger and more powerful 3.6L V6 producing 301 hp for the 2013 model year.
For the third generation, Chevy completely revamped the Equinox engine lineup with three brand-new turbocharged engines that included a diesel option. The base 1.5L turbo is a highly efficient option that still makes 170 hp. Upgrading to the 2.0L turbo will provide you with 252 hp and similar performance to the older V6 options. Finally, the 1.6L turbo-diesel makes an incredible 39 MPG on the highway, although it was discontinued after the 2019 model year.
Safety Features
The Chevy Equinox is equally as reliable as it's versatile. Aspiring shoppers can be assured the Equinox is a safe ride both inside and out. Advanced safety features have been available options on this SUV for a considerable amount of time. However, as time moved forward, many of the available safety options that fans grew to love became standard features.
For example, the 2014 Equinox can be outfitted with a wide range of available safety features such as lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and a rearview camera to enhance visibility. Lane departure warning will alert the driver if the vehicle unintentionally drifts out of its lane, while forward-collision warning alerted the driver of an impending impact so that you have time to brake. All of these features became more capable and more available over time until they finally became standard on all trims for the 2020 model year.
Not only were the features robust, but the 2014 Equinox itself received high ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The 2014 Equinox received an overall safety rating of four stars, with individual ratings of four stars for front-impact, five stars for side-impact, and four stars for rollover risk. In 2018, the NHTSA inspected the new Equinox of that year and determined it had earned a five-star front impact rating. Coupled with a five-star side-impact rating, the 2018 Equinox earned an overall safety rating of five stars.
By 2018, Chevy had also provided the Equinox with a wider array of both standard and optional safety features - the 2018 Equinox came standard with a rearview camera, for instance - but perhaps the most exciting addition is the Teen Driver safety software suite. This new technology was made standard for the 2018 model year and will reduce your worries if you have a newly licensed driver in the household.
Teen Driver completely revolutionizes the way that new drivers learn how to operate the vehicle when on the road. It all starts with the parents, who can set restrictions on their teen's driving experience. These restrictions include audio limits for music playback and a speed reminder to alert the teen driver if they exceed a preset speed. Additionally, Teen Driver has a multitude of different safety functions, such as muting the speaker audio if the passengers don't have their seatbelts fastened. The vehicle will even prevent shifting out of park until the driver has buckled up.
After the teenager is done driving, a detailed report card is then accessible by the parents, informing them of their child's performance on the road. This is helpful for a multitude of reasons and can help parents coach their kids on fixing key areas that need improvement so that the teenage driver will have all of the tools necessary to become a safe driver.
