The Trax’s adventurous spirit continues to be apparent through its LT trim, which has skid plates and a digital compass. You don’t need skid plates in cosmopolitan areas, but if you’re going to travel to destinations where you’re bound to kick up a little dirt, you’ll want this feature. And, if you go beyond the reach of cell towers, you could find your smartphone navigation app stops working, and you need that compass to keep you on track. The Trax is also slightly taller than the Kicks, offering an increased ride height for drivers. Plus, its aesthetic is distinctly more athletic compared to the sleek design of the Kicks.

Wi-Fi Is Standard in the Trax, but a Luxury in the Kicks

Another difference we like to note is the Wi-Fi hotspot. It’s available starting on the base-level trim of many more recent Trax models, but it’s only available on the top trim of the Kicks. Today, most drivers require Wi-Fi in their vehicles. Not having the option to stay connected while on the road is simply not an option for many drivers. This might be a dealbreaker for drivers looking for the most affordable model. If you want the Kicks and want Wi-Fi, you’ll be forced into that upper trim. Meanwhile, it’s available on all Trax trims from more recent model years, meaning you’re free to choose the model that works for you.

Differences in Cargo Size and Passenger Volume

The Chevy Trax and Nissan Kicks have some dimension differences worth mentioning. Let’s look at the 2021 models to give you an idea of what you’ll find on the used market. It can’t necessarily be said that one has better cargo volume than the other — it depends on how you plan on using the cargo area. If you plan on utilizing all five seats and relying on the trunk space, the Kicks has the Trax beat. The Kicks gets 25.3 cu.ft. of cargo room with the rear seats up, compared to just the 18.7 cu.ft. of the Trax. However, put the rear seats down, and suddenly the Trax has the Kicks beat, with a massive 48.4 cu.ft. of cargo room, compared to the 32.3 cu.ft. of the Kicks.

If you know you’ll need all five seats for passengers, then the bigger trunk of the Kicks could be the model for you. As for overall passenger volume, the two vehicles are nearly identical. The 2021 Kicks has 93.9 cu.ft. of passenger volume, and the Trax has 92.8 cu.ft. The difference will not be noticeable to the driver or passengers.

A few years back, Chevy announced that it would discontinue their Chevy Trax after 2022. We were disappointed to hear this but happy to learn that Chevy was committed to providing an equally capable small SUV for the market. With production halting, we knew many folks would be searching for a used Chevy Trax for sale. Once a suitable replacement for this popular SUV came off the line, the Trax would become just another happy memory for the average buyer.

We, like many in the industry, thought that what Chevy meant by their public commitment to providing the industry with a small SUV was a renewed focus on the Chevy Trailblazer, another small SUV in their lineup, but the Trailblazer just isn’t quite the same as the Trax. The Trax was always more geared toward urban usage and fuel economy than the slightly more rugged, off-road-ready Trailblazer. Suffice it to say, we were overjoyed to learn that the Chevy Trax was on a brief hiatus; it’s coming back for 2024!

During its year off, the Trax seems to have time traveled and returned with a total overhaul and a new suite of features to prove it. While we still love the older used models of the Trax, there are a lot of great updates in the 2024 Trax to be excited about. So what exactly changed between the 2022 Trax and the 2024 Trax? Let’s find out what Chevy’s been up to.

Value

The Chevy Trax has always been an affordable option for folks looking for a compact SUV. Despite the rapid inflation rates we’ve seen in the USA since 2021, Chevy has somehow managed to knock down the base price of the 2024 Trax and increase its overall fuel efficiency, making the Trax a boon for those venturing into the compact SUV market with price in mind.

A 2024 Chevy Trax starts at a base MSRP of $20,400 compared with a 2022 model, which rang for a minimum of $21,400 a few years back.^[a] If cost is a primary factor in your search for a new or used Chevy Trax, weigh the reduced MSRP of a new Trax versus the pricing offered on an older model. You may be surprised to see how the pricing shakes out between a new and used model, given how cost-conscious Chevy has been with the Trax. If you are clinging to a 2022 Chevy Trax right now, the option of trading your way up to the 2024 model is always there. As you’ll see below, the jump from 2022 to 2024 is one well worth making.

Besides the Trax’s actual cost to purchase, fuel efficiency is the second most wallet-impacting factor a buyer should consider. The 2022 Trax gets roughly 24 MPG in the city and 32 MPG on the highway for a combined 27 MPG with front-wheel drive (FWD). In contrast, the 2024 Trax is rated at an impressive 28 MPG city and 32 MPG highway for a combined 30 MPG with FWD. This noticeable increase will be a happy relief for many at the pump.

Power

You might have noticed that we only gave mileage specs for the FWD version of the Trax. This is a significant change between the 2022 Trax and the 2024 Trax, as the 2024 Trax is only available with FWD, one of many changes that contributes to the 2024 Trax’s lower overall cost and greater fuel efficiency ratings. It is worth noting, however, that if you frequently drive on rougher roads or like extra security during bad weather, a used Chevy Trax might serve you better than the new model. For reference, the 2022 AWD versions of the Trax get 23 MPG in the city and 30 MPG on the highway for a combined 26 MPG.

Performance has also changed with the overhaul, with the 2024 Trax boasting a new engine. The 2022 Trax has a 1.4L EcoTec Turbo I-4 engine that clocks in at 155 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque, while the 2024 Trax features a 1.2L EcoTec Turbo I-3 clocking in at 137 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. You should look into an older Trax if you need that extra power, but if you value fuel efficiency to a higher degree, the newer model might be the one for you.

Size and Design

While still considered a subcompact SUV and falling behind the compact Trailblazer SUV in Chevy’s lineup in size, the 2024 Trax hit a growth spurt, being roughly two inches wider and nearly a foot longer. With slightly more legroom for up to five passengers, the Trax accommodates. More importantly, though, the increase in size means more cargo room! In the 2022 model, you get 18.7 cu.ft. in the back with the seat up and 48.4 cu.ft. when they’re laid flat. This increases to a whopping 25.6 and 54.1 cu.ft. in the 2024 model. This is a good change on Chevy’s part, as any extra space is appreciated in a subcompact SUV while maintaining lithe driveability for packed city streets and tight parking lots.

You will also notice that the design of the 2024 Trax differs noticeably compared with the used models. Most notable is the inclusion of three new trim levels, all with slight design variations: the 1RS, 2RS, and ACTIV, bringing the Trax above board with the rest of Chevy’s lineup. We love the looks of the Trax’s used models, too, so it’s all about personal preference when deciding between styles.

Technology

Between 2022 and 2024, there have been a lot of advancements in automotive technology, particularly in the realm of safety, and Chevy didn’t skimp on their new Trax. We’d typically expect all these additional technology features to come with a price increase, but Chevy has managed to keep prices low despite the upgrades.

The 2024 Chevy Trax comes standard with Chevy Safety Assist, a suite of six advanced safety features. These include:

• Forward Collision Alert
• Automatic Emergency Braking
• Front Pedestrian Braking
• Lane Keep Assist With Lane Departure Warning
• Following Distance Indicator
• Intellibeam High Beam Assist

The new Trax was designed to be incredibly tech-forward, with Chevy courting younger drivers with connectivity-focused quality-of-life features. The Trax’s redesign coincides with the available myChevrolet Mobile App, which lets drivers wirelessly connect their smartphone to their car, allowing them access to status reports (tire pressure, fuel levels, oil life, etc), remote access through the app (such as remote start and locking/unlocking), and vehicle diagnostics that’ll notify you of any issues and allow you to schedule any applicable service right through the app.

Other features include a standard wireless phone integration (in addition to the myChevrolet Mobile App) with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which comes on a standard eight-inch touchscreen infotainment display that goes up to 11 inches on some trims. More minor comforts like a wireless charging pad are available, so drivers can immerse themselves in as much tech as they need. New purchasers can even opt for the built-in wireless hotspot to connect to Wi-Fi wherever they go.
